Your teeth are not the only important part of your mouth. Your gums are essential to oral hygiene as well. We can provide periodontal cleanings and treatment, or refer you to one of our recommended specialists.

Dental Home Care

A healthy body starts with a healthy mouth! Why? The human mouth contains over 500 different types of bacteria. When the gum tissue becomes inflamed from something as simple as gingivitis, this bacteria enters the blood stream. The blood stream carries the bacteria all through the body attacking what is already not functioning properly. There are three different types of gum treatment to keep your mouth healthy; Prophylaxis, Scaling and Root Planning and Periodontal maintenance.

Prophylaxis is a fancy name for your 6 month regular cleaning and exam. This is when the hygienist will evaluate your gums and remove tarter or plaque from the mouth, polishing them to make them sparkle. During the gum evaluation, we check the bone level that is around your teeth to make sure it is healthy. 2-4mm is normal, anything above that is diseased.

Scaling and Root Planning is done when the bone level around the teeth is more than 4mm and tarter is visible on your x-rays. This procedure requires an injection to numb half of the mouth in order to go below the gum line to remove the tarter, we want you to be comfortable. The hygienist will use various tools to remove the tarter below the gum line creating a smooth tooth surface allowing the tissue to heal and shrink against the tooth. Unfortunately, the bone that is lost will not grow back, that is why a one-two extra cleanings are recommended for you per year.

Periodontal Maintenance is done after you have Scaling and Root Planning. This is what I call “dental parole”, because we need to make sure your home care is good and that the bone loss is under control. We control the reoccurrence of gum disease by keeping the tarter and plaque off the teeth. Some people due to genetics just need a little more help with home care then others.
